Diary of an All-nighter

Diary of an All-nighter So…Im not sure exactly where September went, but in plain English: school got harder. Were in rough terrain first wave of exams, or in my case, reviews (as you will see), etc. Apparently, there is a sophomore slump for college students i.e. performance drops compared to freshman year due to a lack of motivation…or something. But I don’t think it’s a motivation issue here. There’s just actually more work (especially courses in your major) â€" and more pressure to be uh, mature and serious. (Also: I’ve had to accept the fact that at MIT, there’s only freshmen and upperclassmen. Well…I’m not freshman no mo’…so… TIME TO GROW UP.) I’ve had a few late nights every week since school started, involving going to the architecture studio sometime during the day/evening and leaving somewhere between 1 and 3 AM. Weeeeee. But this past Wednesday was the first “final review” of the semester â€" which means everybody presents their design projects and the professor and TAs critique them…and which also means an all-nighter. Since I knew it was going to happen, I brought along my camera to document things…(brief preface: the first project is about using folding operations to construct a bridge) [Getting started] Ive got a variety of beverage options: (OJ, vanilla frapp, water, or Elmer’s???) [~7PM] So I rushed to the art supply store to buy materials that I didnt end up usingoops. And it was rainingand the boards were almost my sizeand I took the bus; that was interesting. [1:43 AM] Emily and Justin debating What is architecture, really [2:07 AM] Xenia and Nicole testing their bridges on the site model. (Still in good spirits, apparently!) [5:46 AM] A Shakira playlist starts blasting…Anyways, theres fatigue, but also anticipation to see everything come together. [7:00 AM] Finally getting started on the drawings… [9:08 AM] Bridge…done… drawing done… time to go home…yayyy. Note the skylight it is actually morning! :) (Clearly, I did not attend the 9AM class.) [Sidestory: I called my mom sometime after the review, because I’ve been neglecting certain parts of real (read: non-studio) life for a while…and she said something like, Why don’t you just manage your time better and make decisions quicker so you can finish quicker and go to sleep? and I’m just like, yo, mom, that’s not how it works…there’s always something to redesign/fix… but she just told me to drop everything and sleep.] This type of architecture studio course, which demands some late nights every week, and some all-nighters every semester, is no doubt a requisite to Course 4. While I love having my little home away from home away from home, it is pretty isolating in a way. I’m always away from my dorm, where the spontaneous greatness happens. My suitemates have joked about, for instance, saying hi/bye to me for a week. At the same time, studio bonding is pretty amazing â€" I would definitely go crazy if I had to work till 9 AM, alone. So a goal of this year is definitely striking that magical balance â€" and NOT neglecting things/peoplelikemom. In other news, I’m taking 4.75 classes. So thats, 3 architecture classes: 4.112 (the studio), 4.401(building technology, where you learn …you know, the practical sides of architecture like foundations and insulation and all that), 4.500 (design computing, where you learn digital fabrication and autoCAD â€" the ultimate time warp). I’m also taking 21F.107 Chinese I Streamlined, meaning Chinese for native speakers who can’t really read or write. To complete the repertoire, I’ve got 15.668 People and Organizations, a 9-credit class in the lovely new MIT Sloan School of Management building. (Fun fact: we have a food fund for this class â€" yay healthy snacks.) Oh yea, also!! I’m taking P.E. Stress Management. HAHA. Best class ever. We discuss how much sleep we’re getting/not getting/how there seems to be a competitive energy at MIT to be the most hardcore and not sleep (Which I do believe is trueas evidenced by this postx_x). But the best part! We almost always end with a 6-minute “relaxation/yoga” segment, during which I essentially take one nap and dream two dreams. Yay lifeeeeeeeeee. I am researching to what extent was American fashion influenced by the first two waves of feminism. During the first wave of feminism, which took place during the late 19th century and early 20th century, women fought for the right to vote, through protests, and eventually achieved this goal. Fashion was influenced during this time- going from conservative Victorian-style ways of dressing to more free ones. The security of these networks is important to maintain by using network monitoring tools such as Wireshark (Prophet Thinking, 2017). Another relevant technology that will be beneficial to use by IoT is authentication for maintaining security. The authentication of devices that are connected with IoT is required, so that no unauthorized access can be implemented. It is also important to maintain security and privacy of multiple users who are transferring and receiving data through IoT devices (Roe, 2017). In this case, biometrics, digital certificate techniques can be used (com, 2017). Encryption technique is also a relevant technology that can be used by developers of IoT to proper security. It is a technique to transfer data over network in unreadable format that is hard to understand by hackers. It is one of the best ways to maintain internet security (Mitchell, 2017). Applications of Technologies The relevant technologies of IoT that are used for security and privacy purposes have several applications areas. All those business organizations and other workplaces where IoT is used to perform different business activities, there these relevant applications can be used. The term Internet of Things (IoT) is cleared to all IT users. But still there are some points that are required to clear to users. After research on this topic, we got following research questions and with these research questions IT users wants to get clarification about these queries. Question 1: What is interesting use of IoT? Answer: According to analysis, we got to know that the most interesting and significant use of IoT is use of sensors that can be used to sense infective awareness in cities. Question 2: Which factor enhances the benefits of IoT? Answer: The most important factor of IoT that enhances its benefits is interoperability. This factor of interoperability is required to create programming of devices and sensors that have possibility of full connected experience. Issues of IoT discussed in Report The main issues of IoT that are discussed in report are related to its security, privacy, development and standards. These issues are required to monitor and control by IoT developers by doing all potential efforts. Besides this information about issues of IoT, another important information that we would like to discuss here in this report is about data breaching that is occurred due to cyber-attack. With the frequent use of IoT devices, physical inaccuracy is found in these devices and it further leads to lack of security and privacy of data i.e. data breaching. Besides this, issues of repetition of accessing data and high risk of security also occur (Forbes.com, 2017). In above segments of this report, all essential issues regarding IoT are discussed in detail. But an important issue is left to discuss in this report and that important issue is regarding storage issue. The issue of storage of data is not a small issue because multiple devices are connected with IoT. If data of all devices that are connected with IoT, will not be stored properly then issue of lack of security and privacy can occur. With the increment in connected devices to IoT, this problem is also increasing. In this case, to handle this issue, some policies are made by IoT developers regarding storage of data online. According to this policy, it is necessary to decide that what type of information is required to store on IoT devices and for how long. In this way, only important information will be stored on IoT devices for a specific period of time (McKinsey Company, 2017). Effect of discussed issues and their applications on Real Life IoT has big influence over real life of its customers because they store their large amount of data on devices that are connected with IoT. In this report, we have already discussed about issues and challenges of IoT and these are directly put influence on data of users. Data breaching, hacking, phishing etc. are common issues that can damage users data that is sent and received over network. Therefore, it is priority of IoT developers to be careful about these issues and keep promise to provide error free issues service to users. After this whole discussion about IoT, we got to know that IoT is an advanced term of Information Technology that has already become popular among people worldwide due to its unique features to manage huge amount of data of different devices. Therefore, business organizations should use this technology for better Management of business data. But in this report, we have also emphasized on security issues of IoT and another challenges. Flowering Judas By Porter There are many theories on the significance of dreams and there is no definitive encyclopedia on their meanings. The ability to have one dream that is so bizarre and fantasy like and the next seem so real that it is hard to tell if it really happened or not, is quite amazing. One theory is that dreams reflect not only daily events and stresses, but also deep hidden fears and desires. It is the way the psyche copes and releases intense emotions, especially the ones most deeply repressed and denied. Katherine Anne Porter relates this phenomenon superbly in "Flowering Judas." Her complicated writing style mimics the way the main character, Laura, utilizes daily defense mechanisms to avoid having any personal connection with anybody, including herself Porter clearly feels that this type of severe emotional suppression is unhealthy and detrimental to ones emotional state. It only furthers alienation from society, the opposite sex and self, all of which go against the nature of humans being social and emotional creatures. This unhealthy psychological repression must have some outlet, which comes inevitably in the enigmatic dream sequence. Porter shows that practicing self-detachment leads to insecurity and lack of purpose outside of maintaining this position. The constant struggle to suppress internal rage and personal opinions is away to maintain safety. The exposure of real feelings makes one vulnerable and because of this Laura keeps everything inside. She subconsciously dresses in heavy nun-like clothes to help hide and keep contained her real feelings and opinions. She also has a pervading sense of danger and disaster on a daily basis and no sense of direction in her life. The suffocation of feelings is so complete that she has no idea of what exactly she is feeling or why she is there. The only comfort she has is her ability to maintain her walls and feel safe. Her comfort is in knowing she is safe because her inner thoughts and feelings are unexposed. Porter demonstrates that the severity of the preoccupation to avoid societal attachments is a very lonely and difficult path that only adds to further internal turmoil. The desire to remain emotionally isolated while having a very active role in the community is extremely contradictory, especially in the tumultuous surroundings the character chooses to live. She is a teacher, a political contact to many people and makes daily visits to political prisoners. Yet, she feels uncomfortable in the world around her, like a warped puzzle piece. There is no personal attachment or even commradery with who she is in contact, not on her part anyway. There is no talk of home or family and she has no desire to go anywhere else. She wants to remain isolated in her daily encounters with society because it is the only familiarity that she has with life, her loneliness and separateness among the masses. This allows her to continue fortifying her internal walls and defenses and this is how she is accustomed to maintaining her safety in isolation. Porter reveals that the supreme denial of the opposite sex strongly goes against natural human instincts and leads to much deep-rooted turmoil and alienation. This driving force behind Laura's desire to be alone stems from her primary instinct to avoid any type of personal contact with men physically or mentally. The thought of being on the same mental meeting ground with a man, let alone having any sort of physical contact causes her severe mental distress and physical pain. A torturous death is more appealing then to allow this type of connection to occur. Even though she feels this way, she subjects herself to male company more than to any other type. The dutiful pleasantness outwardly presented to male company is a complete contradiction with the internal struggle to contain intense rage and fear of men. The male issues are exposed in the dream when for the first time Laura's true emotions are revealed and a satiating experience is had between her and a symbolic male. This dream, of course, is a nightmare for her. She wakes screaming and does not want to go back to sleep for fear that all she strives to maintain in her stance against men will dissipate in the dream state, which she cannot control. In dreams there is freedom from daily restraints. Emotions are able to flow free and are a key to dealing with personal issues. "Flowering Judas" shows that severely psychologically repressed people are able to release their hidden emotions in dreams but once awake, they remember the

Study On Use Of Pile Foundation Engineering Essay Piles and pile foundations have been in use since prehistoric times. Pile is commonly described as a columnar element of a building foundation. Its function is to transfer the load from a superstructure to the hard layer in the soil, or on to the rocks. The objective of this project is to identify piles and its uses in the construction industry, based on its types and suitability. This report is based on the three main types of piles, which are large displacement piles, small displacement piles and replacement piles. Figure 1. Pile Construction This report also contains research materials done by several authors have published various journals on the aforementioned topic, and numerous engineering books on pile, pile engineering, soil types, etc have been referred to assist this report. Many journals were consulted during the inception of this research. Topics like Efficiency of Pile groups installed in cohensionless soil using artificial neural networks, Experimental study on pile-end post-grouting piles for super large bridge pile foundations, etc were consulted. From these journals, it has been concluded an Artificial Intelligence application can be made to predict the efficiency of the pile. Based on the results, a pile cap can be created, or even grouting works can be performed to improve the load bearing of the structure. The commonest function of piles is to transfer a load that cannot be adequately supported at shallow depths to a depth where adequate support becomes available, also against uplift forces which cause cracks and other damages on superstructure. A bearing pile is described as a pile which can pass through weak material, whilst its tip get across a narrow distance, which in turn leads to a layer of improved bearing capacity. When piles are installed onto a layer with minimal ability to support, and the bearing capacity is being carried by friction which is acting on the sides of the pile, they are called friction piles. Many times, the load-carrying capacity of piles results from a combination of point resistance and skin friction. The load taken by a single pile can be determined by a static load test. The allowable load is obtained by applying a factor of safety to the failure load. Types of Piles Piles are of various types. These piles are classified based on the scope of construction and soil type. Figure 3. Common Driven Pile Types Concrete Piles Precast concrete piles can be either reinforced concrete piles or prestressed concrete piles. Concrete is adaptable for a wide range of pile types. It can be used in precast form in driven piles, or as insertion units in bore piles. Dense well-compacted good- quality concrete can withstand fairly hard driving and it is resistant to attack by aggressive substances in the soil, or in seawater or ground water. However, concrete is precast piles is liable to damage (possibly unseen) in hard driving conditions. Weak, honeycombed concrete in cast-in-situ piles is liable to disintegration when aggressive substances are precast in soils or in ground water. Cast In Place Concrete Piles Closed-ended hollow tubular sections of reinforced concrete or steel which are first driven into the ground and then filled with in-situ concrete. Cast-in-place concrete piles with their shell driven with mandrel are typically 50 to 80 ft (15 to 24 m) long and can specifically be designed for a wide range of loads. Typical loads that these piles can carry are 50 to 120 kips (222 to 534 kN) provided the maximum stress in concrete, is not more than 33% of 28-day strength. Figure 4. Cast-in-Situ Concrete Piles The main disadvantages are that these piles are difficult to splice after concreting, their thin shells can be damaged during driving, and redriving is not recommended. Not the most economical solution, limited span length and requires formwork support. Generally, stress in steel should not exceed 0.35 x yield strength of steel. Figure 5. Cast-in-Situ Concrete Piles The advantages are tht they have low initial cost, and tapered sections can provide higher-bearing resistance in granular stratum. These piles are best suited as medium-load friction piles in granular soils. Absolute minimum depth, no deck joints and aesthetic for small stream crossings. Precast Concrete Piles Manufacturing of pre-cast concrete piles are done within the range of 250mm 450mm. Mostly, the maximum section length can go up to 20m. There are various shapes of pile sections (eg. H-shaped, triangular-shaped, hexagonal-shaped, etc). Figure 6. Precast Reinforced Concrete Pile The construction of pre-cast concrete piles are done either in-situ or factory. Production and construction process widely affects the quality of the pile. A pile shoe should be fixed to the pile, in case the soil deposits contain a lot of boulders. This protects the pile while performing hard driving. For prestressed sections the maximum stresses should not exceed (0.33Æ’c 0.27 pe); where pe = effective prestress stress on the section. The main disadvantages of these piles are that they are difficult to handle without damage unless prestressed. They have a high initial cost, and prestressed piles are difficult to splice. It is also difficult to manufacture, subject to longitudinal and transverse cracking, not appropriate for curved or flared structures, complicated for skews. The advantages of these pile types include high load capacities, corrosion resistance, and resistance to hard driving. Absolute minimum depth of precast bridge for short and intermediate spans. Expedites stage construction. Drilled Shafts Drilled shafts are also known as caissons or piers or bored piles. This is often known to be a cost effective solution which is practiced worldwide. This is a widely used type of deep-foundation. Drilled Shafts are widely used in the construction of bridges and large buildings. This technique is used in construction areas where large loads along with lateral resistance are key factors. Figure 7.1. Drilled Shaft The main advantages are that it is economical, it could minimize pile need for pile cap, slightly less noise and reduced vibrations, adapts easily to varying site conditions and has high axial and lateral loading capacity. The main disadvantages are that it is extremely sensitive to construction procedures, not ideal for contaminated sites, and lack of qualified inspectors. Figure 7.2. Drilled Shaft A Drilled Pile is made of concrete or grout and cast or poured, in a plastic state, into a drilled hole in the earth. Augercast, Drilled Shafts, Drilled Cast-in-situ and, their variations are all forms of drilled piles. Completed drilled piles cannot be easily inspected after installation and can be difficult to install in very soft or loose soils, wet, and marine conditions. A Drilled Pile removes soil from the ground and the resulting round hole is filled with concrete or grout. Steel Piles These are more expensive then timber or concrete but this disadvantage may be outweighed by the ease of handling of steel piles, by their ability to withstand hard driving, by their resilience and strength in bending, and their capability to carry heavy loads. Steel piles can be driven in very long lengths and cause little ground displacement. They are liable to corrosion above the soil line and in disturbed ground, and they require cathodic protection of a tong life is desired in marine structures. Long steel piles of slender section may suffer damage by buckling if they deviate from their true alignment during driving. Figure 8. Steel Piles Steel piles are strong, lightweight to handle, and capable ofcarrying heavy loads to deeper bearing stratum. They can be extended to any length since splicing is relatively easy, and these can also be readily cut to any required length. This makes steel piles suitable for areas where the depth of bearing strata are variable. Various types of steel piles in common use include pipe piles, H-section piles, box section piles, and tapered and fluted tubes. Pipe piles and H-section piles are the most commonly used steel piles in engineering practice. Steel pipe piles can either be driven open ended or closed ended. Open-ended piles will experience less driving resistance and can be drilled through obstructions such as boulders and bedrock. The piles are generally economical in the range of 40 to 80 ft (12 to 24 m) and can carry loads as high as about 250 kips (1115 kN). Pipe piles are most suited where overburden is soft clays, silts, and loose-to-medium dense sand and is underlain by dense-bearing granular material. H-Piles A form of Steel pile is known as H-Pile. These are wide-flanged sections made of steel. The biggest advantage of this pile is that the displacement of soil becomes very less, when compared against other soil displacement methods practiced in the world. The H-pile falls under small displacement category. Figure 9. H-Piles Timber piles cannot be driven through hard ground. Steel H-piles are essentially end-bearing piles. Due to limited perimeter area, H-piles cannot generate much frictional resistance. Corrosion is a major problem for steel H-piles. The corrosion is controlled by adding copper into steel. H-piles are easily spliced. They are ideal for highly variable soil conditions. H-piles can bend under very hard ground conditions. This is known as dog legging, and the pile installation supervisor needs to make sure that the piles are not out of plumb. H-piles can get plugged during the driving process. If the H-pile is plugged, end bearing may increase due to larger area. On the other hand, skin frictionmay become smaller due to smaller wall area. When H-piles are driven, both analyses should be done (unplugged and plugged) and the lower value should be used for design. Unplugged: Low end bearing, high skin friction. Plugged: Low skin friction, high end bearing. Advantages are that H-pile is available in various lengths and sizes easy to splice high capacity low soil displacement many penetrate larger obstructions with driving shoes. The disadvantages are that it is vulnerable to corrosion, hence not recommended as friction piles in granular soils may force the h-pile to bend on the weaker axis, during the pile-driving process. Due to this, there is a high chance of curvature, which may result when the piles are driven into a larger depth. Cylindrical Cylindrical piles have a high axial compressive strength for high bearing capacities; they have high moments of inertia and therefore can serve well as both a column and a foundation pile under high vertical and lateral loads. Figure 10. Cylinder Piles Cylinder piles are often used in nearshore applications where smaller foundation piles would require cofferdam construction and other costly measures. Drilled shafts have similar load bearing properties and capabilities, however, they are generally more costly than piles installed by impact driving. Timber Piles Untreated timber piles may be used for temporary construction, revetments, fenders and similar work; and in permanent construction where the cutoff elevation of the pile is below the permanent ground water table and where the piles are not exposed to marine borers. They are also sometimes used for trestle construction, although treated piles are preferred. Timber piles are difficult to extend, hard to anchor into the footing to resist uplift, and subject to damage if not driven carefully. Timber piles also have a maximum allowable bearing capacity of 45 Tons, whereas most structure piles are designed for at least 70 Tons. These piles are mostly installed by driving and are best suited as friction piles in granular material. Figure 11. Timber Piles The main advantages of timber piles are that they have low initial cost, are easy to handle, and resist decay when they are permanently submerged. The main disadvantages are that it is tough to splice, are vulnerable to damage in hard driving, and are susceptible to decay unless treated. Treatment becomes necessary when these piles are intermittently submerged. Composite Piles Materials may be used in combination in piles and the most common example is the use of steel and concrete. This may be by using driven steel casings of various types filled with a structural core of concrete, or a steel pile protected externally by concrete casing; the latter is normally only possible for exposed lengths of piles such as would be encountered in a jetty structure. There are, however, forms of steel pile, which have grout pipes throughout their length, which are used for forming a protective outer casing after driving. Figure 12. Composite Piles The maximum stresses in timber, steel and concrete should not exceed the values specified above for various materials. The main disadvantage of these piles is that it is difficult to attain good joint between two materials. The main advantage is that considerable length can be provided at comparatively low cost. High capacity may be possible depending on materials. use of piles in construction There are two types of piles used for construction: Displacement Piles Non-Displacement Piles DisplacemeNt Pile The type of pile, which is rammed into the ground, which does not remove the soil, but displaces the soil downwards and sidewise. This type of pile foundation is called displacement pile. Figure 13. Displacement Piles This method piles displace soil during their installation, such as driving, jacking, or vibration, into the ground. Examples of these types of piles are timber, precast concrete, prestressed concrete, close-ended steel pipe, and fluted and tapered steel tube piles. The advantages of displacement piles are: Material forming pile can be inspected for quality. Soundness before driving. Not liable to squeezing or necking. Construction operation not affected by ground water. Projection above ground level advantageous to marine structures. Can be driven in the very long lengths. The disadvantages of displacement piles are: May break during driving, necessitation replacement pile. Unseen damages may occurring thus decreasing the carrying capacity. Noise pollution may be caused during hammering. Vibration caused during the hammering process may pose a threat to nearby structures.
